Description/Details:

Object Name & Function
This is a Chinese Pewter Wine Warmer (or Teapot) dating back to the Late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China period (early 20th century).
  • Material: Aged Chinese pewter (Dian Tong Xi / "Dot-Copper Pewter").
  • Function: Tall, rectangular vessels with overhead handles and inset panels like this were traditionally used to warm wine. Because pewter conducts heat exceptionally well, the entire pot would be placed inside a larger bowl of hot water to gently heat the wine before serving.
2. Analysis of the Bottom Seal Mark
The circular stamp on the base is a classic merchant trademark from the Chaoshan region in Guangdong province, which was renowned for its metalwork. The characters read from right to left, top to bottom:
  • (Chao Yi Yong Shun Lao Dian): This identifies the maker as the "Yong Shun Old Shop" located in Chaoyi (an ancient term for the Chaoshan/Chaozhou area in Guangdong).
  • (Zhen Liao Dian Tong):
    • "Zhen Liao" translates to "Genuine Materials," acting as a promise of quality.
    • "Dian Tong" (literally "dotted with copper") is a historical quality standard for Chinese pewter. Because pure tin is too soft to hold a shape, masters would "dot" a precise, small amount of copper into the alloy to harden it. A "Dian Tong" mark guarantees a high-grade alloy containing roughly 70% to 80% or more of pure tin.
3. Artistic Craftsmanship & Imagery
  • Glass Pane Insets: The sides of the pot feature inset glass windows protecting hand-painted inserts (often referred to as reverse-glass or paper-backed paintings).
  • Thematic Narratives: The illustrations depict scenes from traditional Chinese opera, folk legends, or historical epics (such as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms). For instance, the figure in Image 3—with a fierce expression, full beard, and holding a halberd—closely mirrors traditional visual depictions of iconic warriors like Zhang Fei or Zhou Cang.
  • Engraved Reliefs: The pewter borders surrounding the windows are finely hand-carved with traditional meander borders (key frets) and scrolling floral patterns, showing the high level of skill of the Chaoshan metalsmiths.
